Cape May News - admin - March 21, 2022

Cape May offers a variety of beaches that line the promenade in Cape May, but some of our favorites are just a short drive away. Most notable is Sunset Beach, which as the name suggests, offers wonderful beach sunsets and Cape May diamonds, bits of polished glass created by glass, sand and time Just north you’ll find Higbee Beach, another incredible option that’s secluded and dog-friendly. For a quiet option that’s right in town, head to Poverty Beach for soft, white sand and a vantage point that might even produce some dolphin sightings during the summer months. There are even a few whale and dolphin watching boats that offer up-close-and-personal encounters if you’re into that kind of thing.  If your looking for the what we think is the best beach area in Cape May its the Cove. The cove is a secluded beach area that features a crescent shaped beach. Located at the end of Beach Avenue towards the lighthouse, the Cove is everything we love about a beach in Cape May. Quiet and remote you will love it!

Higbee Beach at Higbee Wildlife Management Area is secluded. Get away from the crowds and enjoy a peaceful stroll on the beach with nothing but the sounds of the waves crashing and the seagulls flying overhead. Do note that the scenic beach is not for swimming as there are no lifeguards on duty.

Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is the ultimate spot to view sunsets. Sunset Beach is the perfect spot to park your car and watch the sun go down on another lovely day in Cape May. Visitors also enjoy the Sunset Beach Grill, where you can dine al fresco with a view!

Cape May Point

Cape May Point is quiet and secluded.

Visit the nearby Cape May Lighthouse at the Cape May Point State Park. The park is also home to a nice stretch of sandy beach as well. And for the bird watches, bring your binoculars and take a stroll through the William and Jane Blair bird refuge.

East Lynne Theater Company presents: Aftermath

Cape May News - admin - March 21, 2022

East Lynne Theater Company presents a reading of the one-act play “Aftermath” by Mary P. Burrill for free, due to support from The New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s “Stages Festival.”

“Aftermath was first published in April 1919 in Max Eastman’s periodical, “Liberator” before it was produced by the Krigwa Players in The Little Theater Competition (performing alongside plays by Eugene O’Neill and Susan Glaspell) in 1928.  It tells the story of a Black soldier, who was awarded the French War Cross for his bravery in WWI, only to return home to discover that his father has been lynched.

Mary P. Burrill was not only a playwright, educator, and activist, but was the first Black graduate of Emerson College.  Her partner of twenty-five years, Lucy Diggs Slowe, was appointed the first Dean of Women at Howard University. The Slowe-Burrill house in Washington D.C. was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020 for “its significance to African American and LGBT history.”

“Aftermath” premieres on Wednesday, April 6 at 8:00 PM on ELTC’s YouTube Channel and is available through Saturday, April 9 at midnight. It can be viewed directly on a flat screen TV, but if viewing it on a computer, ELTC recommends connecting the computer to the TV with an HDMI cable so it can be seen on a larger screen with better sound. Closed Caption is available on YouTube. The direct link to “Aftermath” will be available several days before the premiere after it’s been edited.
