Greater Cape May Historical Society, manages The Colonial House Museum. The museum showcases the history of the greater Cape May area through a many exhibits, displays, artifacts, and Cape May memorabilia. The museum is located on Washington Street.

The Colonial House was originally a tavern and family house of The Hughes Family, Memacum Hughes was famous patriot from the Revolutionary War. The architecturally distinctive building features beautifully restored common and tea rooms, a tavern room, and a Gallery Exhibit Room on the first floor. Other rooms in the museum that are open to the public include a colonial era cooking/eating room, a bedroom, and an added research/exhibit room. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from June until September. The museum is also open by appointment.

The headquarters of this organization, incorporated in August, 1974, is the Colonial House Museum c 1730, located at 653½ Washington Street, Cape May, next to Cape May City Hall. This house was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A room, added in the 1930’s, is a research/exhibit room.
